Petals and pooches

May 5, 2025 by Jeaniene Frost 3 Comments

Every spring, a sidewalk near my house turns into a pink petal fairyland. Here’s how it starts out:

And here is how it looks when all those petals drop:

Here is my eldest dog, Loki, with one of those petals stuck to his nose during a walk:

*grins* And here’s the backstory behind this photo, taken while I was walking Loki along with my 60lb Husky. All dog dialog is my interpretation of their actions and barks.

Me: *sees Loki with the snoot petal, immediately tries to get a pic while also holding both dog leashes in one hand and taking out my phone with the other.*

Loki: *turns away and tugs on his leash to keep walking*

My Husky: *sees camera pointed at Loki* Ooh, are you taking pictures? I love pictures! *shoves her nose into my phone*

Me: *tries to move around my Husky to take a pic of Loki’s snoot before the petal falls off*

Loki: *keeps turning his head away while trying to walk home*

My Husky: *shoves her nose back into my phone* What is wrong with you? A better snoot shot is RIGHT HERE.

Loki: *notices another dog across the street, starts trash-talking it in barks* Hey! You! Don’t come near my side of the street, or I’ll eat you! I might only be 30lbs, arthritic, and half-blind, but I can still take you!”

Other, younger, bigger dog, in barks: “Make my day, grandpa!”

My Husky: *keeps shoving her nose into my phone* You haven’t taken ONE pic of me yet! Stupid human, can’t you do anything right?

Loki *in more barks as other dog’s owner leads his pet away* Yeah, you’d better run, pooch! Any sidewalk I step on is MINE.

My Husky: *finally sees the other dog* A new friend! I’ll go over and say hi!

Me: *gives up on pics in favor of holding both dogs in place by my feet*

My Husky: Ooh, you pulled me closer. I will now jump up on you and give your face a dozen licks.

Loki: *tugs on leash* I have triumphed over claiming this part of the sidewalk, so we will go home.

Me: *pulls out phone again, snaps several random shots in Loki’s direction while walking home.*

Me later while scrolling my phone: Wow, one of those pics was actually usable!

And that’s just one afternoon stroll as a pet parent of a cranky Shiba Inu and a goofy Husky😆

If you haven’t seen my Husky before, here she is, smiling for the camera:

I remember when Loki was the baby. Has it really been that long?

My Loki is a 20lb rescue with about 10 different breeds according to his DNA test 🙂 .
He too thinks he owns the entire neighborhood!
