Weekend recap and music suggestions, please

May 9, 2011 by Jeaniene Frost 57 Comments

Hi all. A belated Happy Mother’s Day to everyone who has children, be they biological, of the heart, or of the four-legged, furry persuasion ;-). I had a nice weekend aside from a 24-hour lack of service with my phone/cable that turned out to be my husband accidentally knocking the power source from the modem while moving some furniture. Ahem. That accounted for some red-faced moments when the cable guy told us the problem, as you can imagine. My internet still worked, so I made up for the lack of phone and TV by brushing up on my research into Vlad’s historical background. There are lots of accounts, but I tend to favor the Russian and Romanian records. Those paint Vlad not as sadistic or insane, but as a leader whose ruthlessness was comparable to the times, and one who was dedicated to his people and his country. That’s the background I’m drawing from with his character in the spinoff series. As to which historical account is correct, who knows? The fun with writing fiction versus nonfiction is that I can choose which one I like more, heh.

Speaking of Vlad’s book, I’m compiling a playlist of songs. Some writers don’t want any background noise while they write, but I find that having a set selection of songs helps push me past those moments when I hit a mental wall. Or maybe it’s pure Pavlovian response and I’ve trained myself to write when I hear the same musical repetitions over and over. Whatever the reason, it helps, which is all I really care about. With that being said, any suggestions on music? Please don’t be shy. Reader suggestions turned me on to bands like Kings of Leon, White Lies, Dashboard Confessional, Breaking Benjamin, and Shinedown, which turned out to be most of my playlist for Eternal Kiss of Darkness.

And thanks to everyone who offered title suggestions for Vlad’s book. I compiled them in a list and sent them to my editor, along with a few ideas I had. No decision has been made yet, but when a title is chosen, I’ll let everyone know! Maybe it will be something you picked :-).

wow exciting history of Vlad, now there IS a huge history world wide and so many accounts of his life, seriously hard to narrow it all down but like You said You pick and choose in fiction, I too prefer the Russian and Romanian accounts and I really do believe it more accurate as back then leaders were rather cruel to be “kind” and there is no comparison with leaders of now as today’s governments did not have the “issues” of revolutions and decent, well on anarchaic levels anyways, so excited for YOU, as for music um KATY PERRY E.T. has VLAD all over it lyrically! 🙂

I have been listening to Florence and the Machine, as well as Mumford and Sons, while I study lately, like someone else mentioned. Although, when I really need to get to work I tend to put on music without lyrics because I get distracted or start to sing along — the Pride and Prejudice soundtrack is actually my favorite for those times. Though honestly, I can listen to so many different things or genres: Blue October, Evanescence, Regina Spektor, Carrie Underwood, and Michael Buble have all been listening favorites lately.
Anyway, can’t wait for Vlad’s story!

    Hi Jeaniene!

As for playlist I love listening ti Evanescence if I want a really goth, gloomy, ethereal sound.

You may think it is weird but there are some songs I have hear on the radio that always make me think of Bones.

    1. DJ Got Us Fallin in Love by Usher (reminds me of Bones dancing in the S7M club scene).

2.) Tonight I’s Loving You by Enrique Inglesias (another scene with Bones and Cat in one of the clubs dancing)

3.) S & M by Rhianna (reminds me of Mencheres and Kira because of the part in the song when they say “sex in the air”. Always reminds me of that scene between the two of them in EKOD).

Hope it gave you a good chuckle. 🙂

    Hey Jeanine,
I happen to listen to a band that I think would go well with Vlad for scenes where he is fighting, mostly because they remind me of when Cat And Bones are fighting all kinds of Undead nasties. The band is Demon Hunter. And one of the many songs I would suggest, is Screams of the undead. (No pun intended…Well, maybe a little) It’s a bit more of a positive toned Heavy metal mixed with some rock.

    Thanks for reading,
    Matthew.

I Totally Heart Vlad. As much as I will mourn for Cat and Bones, I can not wait for Vlad’s books.

When I’m writing I need something with a strong baseline and that is loud. For some reason loud, heavy songs work for me.

I also like a lot of cover songs for their unique interpretations. I think it gets the brain working because it’s something familiar but new.

    Hallelujah – k.d. lang
    Misguided Ghosts – Paramore
Waves and Both of Us – Charlotte Sometimes
Closer, Sex on Fire – Kings of Leon
Wake Up Dead Man – Scala & Kolacny Brothers
Creep (Live), Die Alone, Breakable, Morning Lullabies, Turn to Stone – Ingrid Michaelson
Running Up That Hill – Placebo
    Run – Snow Patrol
    Feeling Good – Muse
My Heroes (SUV) – The Cliks
Le Disko – Tiny Toy Guns
Running Up that Hill – Within Temptation
The Chemicals Between Us – Bush
    Eternal Life – Jeff Buckley
Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ – Bob Dylan
Devil in Me – Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat
Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked – Cage the Elephant
I Know What I Am – Band of Skulls

    For some comedy relief….

    Heaven’s on Fire – KISS

Whenever I hear Taylor Swift’s “Back to December”, it makes me think of the ending to HWTTG. Cat left Bones in December, and that’s his birthday month as well. I think of that when Taylor Swift sings “Your birthday passed, and I didn’t call……”. Just a suggestion!

I love the soundtrack to “Queen of the Damned”. Obviously all vampire themed, and ranges from sort of techno to raging metal.

    Tool and A Perfect Circle.

    Foo Fighters.

And lately, when I hear “The Band Perry”, I can’t help but think of Cat and Bones, they have a song with that goes ….

“All the girls in town look you up and look you down
    I know
So come on and pick your kitten
Purr baby purr go ahead and say the word let’s go
Think I’m the one your takin’
    Got me feelin lucky…”

I think the title of the song is “Hip To My Heart”. Made me giggle the first time I heard it as I was revisiting HTTG. I’ve read it at least five times, and still find it fresh and fun to read. 🙂

I highly recommend “Amen Omen” by Ben Harper. Admitedly, it was used on the show Vampire Daries, but it is because the lyrics fit the theme of long lived vampire being in love. Here is a sample of the lyrics so you see what I mean, but the whole song is full of perfect lines that just fit that subject and the voice and instrumental is wonderful as well.

    “I listen to a whisper
    Slowly drift away
    Silence is the loudest
    Parting word you never say
    I put your world
    Into my veins
    Now a voiceless sympathy
    Is all that remains

    Amen Omen
Will i see your face again
    Amen Omen
Can i find the place within
To live my life without you”

Hope you get a chance to check it out 🙂

well I just watched some u-tube of how the night huntress series would be cast.i for one think if it were to become a movie or t.v serires then the character of cat should be cast from a actress that has soft feacture, more oval shaped face.for bones i have no clue I would need to see a bunch of pics of actors.for it too be a true success, you need to pick the cast very carfuly, like on how twilight was casted.I’ve seen a poster of both cat and bones and you would need to get very close to the features of the guy in the poster from this sight. You’d think with all the other books becomeing movies that these ones would get some screen time too!It would be soo awsome!!

As for tunes, my humble opinion is that Vlad himself probably loves listening to John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” album. On vinyl. While draped in a Snuggie. 🙂

Try My Chemical Romance. They’re a band with a really powerful beat, total rock. If you like Breaking Benjamin you’ll probably like them.

My Chemical Romance: Vampires Will Never Hurt you
My Chemical Romance: Thank you for the Venom
My Chemical Romance: Bullet Proof Heart
    My Chemical Romance: Vampire Money

And a more comical one, but I still think it’s very Night Huntress Worldish-

    Scissor Sisters- I can’t decide
