Lost in translation: Snippet from RWA 2011

July 1, 2011 by Jeaniene Frost 12 Comments

I’m having a great time at the Romance Writers of America convention in New York. A post with pictures and a complete wrap up will be forthcoming in the next few days, but until then, here’s a snapshot of my afternoon today. I’ll preface this with a caveat that RWA is a wonderful convention, but don’t expect a lot of sleep while attending it. Now that I’m in the latter stage of the convention, that lack of sleep is clearly affecting my communication skills. Case in point: Last night, my roommate Vicki Pettersson told me about a great play she’d seen where part of the performance involved tactile and sensory interaction. Patrons moved through several rooms, many of which had various prop items that patrons were encouraged to handle in order to enhance their experience in the story. Vicki said she loved it so much she was thinking of going back to it tonight.

.
So that’s what was in my mind when Vicki asked me the following question twenty minutes ago…

Vicki: What do you want to do after dinner tonight?
Me: *tired and inarticulate* I thought you said you wanted to do that touchy feely thing.
Vicki: *eyes bulge, backs away slowly* Ah, um…
Me: *realizing how that sounded* No, not touchy feely like THAT! I meant the play you were thinking about seeing again!
Vicki: *stops backing away * Oh, well, maybe we’ll see another play instead.

Lesson learned: Even when I’m tired, I should think more before I speak :).

Lol! Poor Vicki Pettersson must have thought for a few seconds that some of Bones’ slutiness was rubbing off on you, too. 😉

Take a nap so the wrong person doesn’t hear something like that and decide to take you up on it.

That gives you a very small taste of my 15 years travelling to Vegas for the week of C.E.S. and the Computer shows. Only venues are the size of Javits and spread over 3 hotels. No sleep, just run around, making contacts for new product contracts and meeting clients. LOL

I’m thinking a certain personalized t-shirt is LONG overdue. 😉

Yes, Vicki’s quite irresistible, but, dang, Jeaniene!

    Thanks for the giggles.

That’s hysterical! You definitely need some sleep girl! Then again, they always say you can sleep when you’re dead 😉

After a particularly loong string of shifts where I work, I too lost control of my speech. Instead of telling someone to “have a good day”, I told them to “have a good lay”. The only way through that is to nod firmly and pretend that you didn’t say anything wrong, so they will blame what they heard on their own dirty minds…
